Who’d win in a fight between Superman and Spawn? How the f*ck old is Cable? And what in the holy hell is a Megatron? When the tough questions arise, Panels on Pages will gather the facts, but it’s up to the PoP!ulation to draw its own conclusions. So come on… Riddle Me This!
Thanos and Darkseid. Hailing from Marvel and DC respectively, they’re two of comicdom’s biggest Big Bads. Fans have often speculated who would win in a fight, and today it’s our turn. Darkseid has the distinction of debuting first, created by the legendary Jack Kirby and first appearing in (believe it or not) Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134, dated November 1970. The undisputed ruler of the evil New Gods of Apokolips, he possesses a genius intellect and great cunning, augmented with superhuman strength, speed, endurance, invulnerability and immortality. His most well-known power is commanding the Omega Force, an energy he usually projects from his eyes in beams of force that can have a variety of devastating effects. Searching the universe for the elusive Anti-Life Equation, which he believes will make him unstoppable, he’s battled the likes of Superman, Wonder Woman, his own son Orion, and pretty much the entire DCU. Thanos debuted just over three years later in February 1973 in the pages of Iron Man #55. The Mad Titan was created by years before by Jim Starlin, who was influenced by Kirby’s New Gods, most notably Metron, before editor Roy Thomas suggested he alter the character to better resemble Darkseid. (“If you’re going to steal one of the New Gods, at least rip off Darkseid, the really good one!”) Born as one of the Eternals of Saturn’s moon Titan, Thanos has augmented his already considerable superhuman strength, speed, endurance, invulnerability and longevity with both science and sorcery, giving him powerful energy blasts, teleportation, and various psionic abilities. During his quests for power he’s fought nearly every Marvel hero (even Ka-Zar!) and even some villains. Unlike Darkseid, who is usually portrayed as pure evil, Thanos occasionally has bouts of what might be altruism, teaming with past enemies and fighting the good fight. At least as long as it suits his needs.
Unlike most of our previous match-ups, these two have actually crossed paths. When the universes collided in 1996′s DC vs. Marvel Comics/Marvel Comics vs. DC miniseries, these two powerhouses were of course drawn to each other. They were separated before they came to blows, but not before they were temporarily merged into the villainous Thanoseid in the Amalgam Comics event. But what I’m proposing is even more terrifying. What if they were able to temporarily set aside their differences and mutual distrust for each other and actually team-up? I have no doubt that they’d have a good chance of laying waste to both the Marvel and DC Universes, with heroes falling right and left before their collective onslaught. Of course once the heroes are out of the way, it would only be a matter of time before one turned on the other. The only question is who would be first? And in all eventuality, the other would probably have seen it coming and prepared for the contingency. Their resulting battle would shake the heavens and decimate the cosmoses. (Cosmosi?) When the dust settles would a victor emerge? Or would they in their furor annihilate each other?
Now’s the time I turn to you, PoP!ulation. Who do you think would win, Darkseid or Thanos? Place your vote and give your thoughts in the comments below.
