Who’d win in a fight between Superman and Spawn? How the f*ck old is Cable? And what in the holy hell is a Megatron? When the tough questions arise, Panels on Pages will gather the facts, but it’s up to the PoP!ulation to draw its own conclusions. So come on… Riddle Me This!
It’s a given that we’re gonna get another Star Trek flick. Into Darkness was a lot of fun and made decent bank, so we might as well start speculating what’ll happen next. (Incidently, spoilers follow in case you haven’t seen Darkness yet.) I’m not here today to talk about plot, though. No, I’m here to talk about death. For some reason, when I walked out of Darkness I had the distinct feeling that one of the main characters wouldn’t survive the next film. I couldn’t tell you why. Maybe it was when Bones went all Miracle Max and brought Kirk back to life. Maybe it was intuition. Maybe I’m just a sick bastard. I should mention here that I don’t actually want any of the crew to be killed off and I’d be happy if no one was. For whatever reason, I still think the filmmakers will up the gravitas of the third installment by skragging a main member of the Enterprise crew. But who’s gonna get Redshirted?
First off, let’s talk about who’s safe from a dirtnap. As I mentioned, Kirk briefly died in Darkness so we can scratch his name off the list. Likewise, Spock would also be “been there, done that.” Alice Eve’s Carol Marcus just showed up, so her dying wouldn’t have the emotional impact the filmmakers would want, making her relatively safe. And since Uhura is just about the only other woman on the ship with any lines, I don’t think she’d be very likely. Besides, Spock already lost his mom, his home planet and most of his race, so losing his girlfriend would just be too depressing.
That leaves us with Bones, Chekov, Sulu and Scotty. Bones is Kirk’s best friend so his death would have emotional impact, and there’s another doctor who could take his place, but I don’t see him being killed off. Karl Urban has gotten near-universal praise for his performance, even bringing OG Spock Leonard Nimoy to tears, so I think he’s safe. Chekov has appeared on screen the least of the crew, and personally I feel that, like Carol Marcus, the audience’s bond with the character isn’t strong enough to elicit that great an emotional response. Although he is the youngest character, so that might add some depth. Sulu seems to be a prime candidate, but would they dare kill off the only Asian dude?
That brings us to the last candidate, and the one I feel is the most likely to die: Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. Why Scotty? Well first off, he’s the comedy relief, and there’s no better way to establish your film is playing for keeps than killing off the comedy relief. Simon Pegg is also (arguably) the most famous and recognizable cast member, so even casual viewers would be affected by Scotty’s demise. I should reiterate that I just have a feeling this will happen, not that I actually want it to. Especially to Scotty, since Pegg is one of my favorite parts of the new Trek flicks and the main reason I even gave the first one a shot. On the plus side, if Scotty is offed and Pegg leaves the franchise, this frees up the filmmakers to bring in Nick Frost as Welshy in future installments.
So what do you think, PoP!ulation? Is one of the main Enterprise crew members on the chopping block? If so, who’s it gonna be? Whether you agree with me or not about Scotty, you have to admit I’ve got a pretty good track record when it comes to predicting these things. Sound off in the comments below. Riddle me this! Who’ll die in the next Trek?
