Riddle Me This! Who will be the Phoenix?
Who’d win in a fight between Superman and Spawn? How the f*ck old is Cable? And what in the holy hell is a Megatron? When the tough questions arise, Panels on Pages will gather the facts, but it’s up to the PoP!ulation to draw its own conclusions. So come on… Riddle Me This!
We’re just a few weeks away from the finale of the first act of Marvel’s Avengers vs X-Men event, in which the Phoenix force will finally reach Earth and claim it’s host. Up to now the story has been pointing readers to Hope Summers, potential Mutant Messiah and resident Jean Grey look-a-like, as the eventual host of the Phoenix force.
But, c’mon, you don’t think it will be THAT easy, do you?
In the almost certain scenario where Hope turns out to be a red herring, let’s take a look at the other possible candidates to become hosts for the all-powerful Phoenix force, starting with…
Hope Summers
Since birth she’s been viewed by many as the savior of the mutant race, and because of that we’ve already seen members of the X-Men give their lives to keep her safe. Raised in the future, she’s spent her entire life training with Cable to prepare for her destiny. And, most importantly, as the Phoenix force makes it’s way towards Earth she has been experience flare-ups of Phoenix powers. It seems obvious that Hope will be the host of the Phoenix force – except that it’s far too obvious a choice.
Odds of becoming the Phoenix: 5,000 to 1
The Scarlet Witch
Where Hope is the (possible) savior of the mutant race, Wanda is their destroyer. Driven mad by a combination of her power and (allegedly?) Dr. Doom, The Scarlet Witch nearly wiped mutants off the face of the earth with just a few words. As she makes her return to the Marvel Universe proper, could she be the mutant chosen to house the massive power that is the Phoenix force? Would her fragile mind even be able to contain it? Regardless of whether she becomes the new Phoenix host it’s clear that Wanda will play a large role in the second act of AvX.
Odds of becoming the Phoenix: 1,000 to 1
Rachel Grey
The daughter of an alternate reality’s Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey, Rachel Grey has already played the role of Phoenix host. With her continued involvement with the X-Men, existing ties to the Phoenix, and relationship to the Summers family, Rachel presents an intriguing option to receive the Phoenix force. But we’ve already been there and done that. It’s someone else’s turn.
Odds of becoming the Phoenix: 500 to 1
Iron Fist
As the Avengers vs X-Men story plays out, it’s slowly being revealed that there is a tie between the mystic force that powers Iron Fist and the Phoenix. With that in mind, what better hero to take on the energies of the mysterious flaming bird than the one who single-handedly defeated a dragon? Counting against him? While increasing in popularity, Iron Fist isn’t exactly mainstream enough to deliver the payoff Marvel would be looking for.
Odds of becoming the Phoenix: 100 to 1
Jean Grey
It’s true that she IS currently dead, but it’s not entirely unlikely that Jean will be revived by the incoming Phoenix force. After all, we’ve already seen it resurrect Captain Marvel. What better opportunity to bring back the fan favorite red headed hottie than as part of the return of the entity that resulted in her death? This would be the likely twist in the story, if not for our final participant…
Odds of becoming the Phoenix: 5 to 1
Cyclops
The leader of the X-Men, the leader of the entire mutant population, and the one man who insists that if the Phoenix can be properly controlled it can be used to revive the nearly extinct mutant race. With the Avengers breathing down his neck insisting that Hope will be unable to control the god-like powers of the Phoenix, who better to step in and take them from her than the man who carries the fate of an entire race on his back? You can count on this one, PoP!ulation – there’s no way Cyclops leaves the Blue Area of the Moon without a new power set.
Odds of becoming the Phoenix: I guarantee it. #MahoneyMarkIt

As much as I hate the idea, I LOVE the reasoning….
I’m hoping Jean comes back and shuts everyone down
Looks like I really need to get on this whole AvX thing.
I’m really thinking it’s going to be Scarlet Witch. They keep having her pop into the comics at times but only on the side lines. Almost like they’re hinting that they’re going to throw her back in to the fight.
