Riddle Me This! Which New Characters Do You Want To See in Avengers 2?
Who’d win in a fight between Superman and Spawn? How the f*ck old is Cable? And what in the holy hell is a Megatron? When the tough questions arise, Panels on Pages will gather the facts, but it’s up to the PoP!ulation to draw its own conclusions. So come on… Riddle Me This!
This Summer’s The Avengers was the culmination of four years of world-building from Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios. The five films leading up to The Avengers established the four main heroes of the group as well as SHIELD and their various agents, including two in Hawkeye and the Black Widow that became active Avengers themselves. With Iron Man 3 coming next year and a slough of other sequels to the other individual Marvel films leading up to the Avengers sequel, it’s to be expected that new characters based on well-known Marvel characters will be introduced in those films. This of course fuels rampant speculation and debate regarding which characters should be introduced and asked to join Earth’s Mightiest Heroes by the time Avengers 2 hits the multiplex.
The Avengers film featured almost all of the founding members of Marvel’s first superteam. The only founders missing from the film and the lead-up movies were Dr. Henry Pym, a.k.a. Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Yellowjacket/Goliath and his on-again, off-again significant other Janet Van Dyne, a.k.a. The Wasp. Many have speculated that they will be introduced in future Marvel films and will join the Avengers in the sequel, but I am not so sure. With both Tony Stark and Bruce Banner on the team, the inclusion of another brilliant scientist like Pym sounds like overkill, and two characters whose only powers involve changing their size may pose too much of a challenge for the movies’ effects departments. These factors may lead to Hank and Jan being left out of the Marvel movie universe for the time being. That’s not to say that Pym won’t show up in a Marvel movie, but he more than likely won’t be an active Avenger.
The revelation of the next foe that will challenge the Avengers at the end of the first film will no doubt require them to recruit some exceedingly powerful members to help them. Fortunately, there are several characters from the comics that the filmmakers could choose from to fit the bill. Ms. Marvel, She-Hulk, and Luke Cage would add a great deal of strength and firepower to their team. They could also recruit a powerful sorcerer like Dr. Strange to help combat this immensely deadly adversary. In addition, they could get valuable help from characters like Black Panther and Iron Fist, who aren’t quite as powerful as the heroes listed previously but would add a great deal of intelligence and impeccable fighting ability to the team. One prominent Avenger that would be an interesting addition would be The Vision, who wouldn’t be too hard to incorporate into the Marvel movie world, since an early scene in Captain America: The First Avenger showed that android technology was being developed around the same time Steve Rogers was given the Super Soldier serum. The only characters who are completely off the table would be the Beast and recent Avenger inductees such as Wolverine and Spider-Man, for obvious reasons. Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch are iffy, because of their obvious association with Magneto in the comics, but that could easily be ignored in a movie.
The debate concerning which characters will or should be included within the ranks of the Avengers in the sequel will no doubt continue until the announcements are made regarding the film. Considering the factors listed in this article, which character would you be most excited to see in an Avengers sequel, and for what reason? Which one would give the team the most advantage against their nemesis? Besides their powers and fighting styles, which character would also interact with the existing members onscreen in the most entertaining way? Make your choice on the poll below, and feel free to share your reasons for your choice in the comments.

If they don’t put G.W. Bridge in the next movie, I’m going to riot.
I want to see Pym more than anyone, and I’d like him to be Giant-Man. However, as you said, the size changing may prove difficult.
I would kill to see Beast, but sadly that can’t happen.
I’m not that big of a Dr. Strange fan, but I’d love to see him if he’s played by Patrick Dempsey.
I love Iron Fist and Luke Cage, but I don’t really want to see them. It would make the team feel too much like the New Avengers, and as much as I like the book (well recently it’s been meh), I don’t want that for the movies.
I don’t really care for the Vision and I’d prefer not to see him.
If anyone can make the Vision relateable and interesting, it’s Joss Whedon.
I believe Vision could work as a character in the next movie. Especially if they do it where Agent Coulson is somehow turned into the Vision. I think that would be amazing.
***SPOILERS***
I hope to god that if they do Vision (which I don’t really want to begin with) that it isn’t Coulson. I’d much rather just have it revealed that Coulson is alive.
I do agree though that if anyone can do Vision right, it’s Joss Whedon.
Either Black Panther (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, especially if Whedon directs again) or Ms. Marvel. (Maybe Elizabeth Banks.)
I would totally be down for Elizabeth Banks as Carol Danvers. And yes, Ejiofor would be a perfect T’Challa.
They’re planning on a Doctor Strange movie, so I can see him being in the next one. Scarlet Witch they can apparently use, but Fox can technically use too, so you’d have 2 different versions of her. I reckon Luke Cage would be a good choice too!
Carol would have the power level to go against Thanos, add another female to the team, and just generally be awesome
Of those, I pick Ms Marvel. She’s a powerhouse and would be the only Super powered woman in the movie. I’m sure they could have some interesting interactions between her and Tony, even if he is taken.
But why not Beast, Wolverine, or Spidey? Is it just because of other studios making those movies? That’s pretty horrible if Marvel can’t use their own characters in their own movies. Nor do I see it would hurt the other franchises to have their character in a huge blockbuster.
That’s absolutely the only reason you couldn’t use Beast, Wolvie, or Spidey. They signed contracts with those other studios for exclusive rights to those characters well before Marvel Studios was ever a thing, and it would take the Fox X-Men films or the Sony Spidey films to stop making money for them to just get handed over. It might be possible for them to share, but highly doubtful.
I hate that Fox has the rights to the Silver Surfer, because he would be a perfect ally in the sequel. Plus, he was completely wasted in the FF sequel and would be so better utilized by Whedon and company.
I figured with the spider-Man franchise getting a reboot that he would certainly be the next Avenger. The way I originally understood the whole rights thing with Sony on the matter was that they had rights to that particular version Spider-Man(the standard version seen in the first 3 movies) and if marvel was to do a movie using any of the other Spider-Man versions they wouldn’t have to do it with Sony’s involvement. However when the trailer for the reboot came out and I seen Sony’s name was attached to it it changed my whole thought process on who would be the next Avenger(s).
What about an alternate version of spider-man. Would sony have rights to him as well. If they went iron spider or scarlet. I know he technically does not belong with the avengers but could be a work around.
I say wait and see if the Dare Devil rights revert back to Marvel or not. I think Fox has to go into production in the next 6 months to keep them.
David Slade is currently developing a DD reboot for Fox.
Last I heard though Fox made him do a rewrite and he has been tweeting that there aren’t any updates or any real movement on it currently ad that he is focusing on Hannibal.
What about the other Marvel, Mar Vell? Wasn’t he once an Avenger?
I think Pym and Wasp are a given if Edgar Wright comes to his senses and fast tracks his work on Ant-Man. Feige said that movie is closer than it’s ever been.
Avengers 2 definitely needs another super heroine and this time with powers. I think Carol Danvers would be perfect. And if they don’t plan on using Mar-Vell, just call her Captain Marvel. Would be damn cool to see a Superman-esque powered chick in a Marvel movie!
Doctor Strange and Black Panther are the next best choices for me. Strange’s movie is apparently in development so he could possibly make it in time for Avengers 2. I really feel like Doctor Strange with the right lead could be a breakout hit similar to the first Iron Man. They need to find an RDJ to play Strange. A Black Panther movie could be a big hit too. Great character, costume, background, etc.
IF they can use Scarlet Witch I would love to see her in the next Avengers. She’s pretty powerful (in the sense of powers and not strength). Does anyone know if Fox has the rights to just X-Men or all mutants in the Marvel universe? Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing two versions of Scarlet Witch. (Vaults said already in a earlier post that maybe both companies can use her.)
But I would really like to see Ms Marvel too. I want to see her kicking ass!
According to Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios can use Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, and apparently, The Skrulls. They fall under a rights “grey area”.
That. Is. Awesome.
They need to get on that right now then
