AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’ elects ‘The Governor’

Following more than a year of speculation as to whether or not series heavy ‘The Governor’ will make an appearance on the AMC adaptation of Robert Kirkman‘s The Walking Dead, and on the heels of casting rumors placing John Hawkes, Danny Trejo, , Tom Savini and Michael Rooker‘s ‘Merle’ in the role of the sadistic dictator of Woodbury, AMC announced late Friday that David Morrissey, veteran character actor of BBC-ish faire such as tv series Meadowlands, Sense & Sensibility, State of Play, and Doctor Who will join the cast as The Governor in the series’ 16-episode third season.

Certainly not the kind of guy many of us would have preferred playing The Walking Dead heavy, especially considering the fan-pedigree of picks like Trejo and Savini, but in retrospect, I don’t think many of us pegged that one dude from Love Actually as Rick Grimes, zombie-killin’ badass.

What’s the good word, PoP!ulation?  Excited that The Governor is officially making his way to television?  What do you think of Morrissey in the role?  Is it possible we’ll see The Governer’s daughter?

I’m still not so sure about him being the Governor. I mean, when you read the comics you get this image in your head of who could be the Governor and the last person to pop up in my mind is a white (British?) guy. But hey, maybe he’ll do good. I’ll wait and see how he does when the third season comes around.

Very happy to see that The Governor will be part of next season. I’m not sure how good this guy playing him is but this show has done such a great job casting for Rick, Shane, etc. that I don’t expect there to be a problem here.

I hope they plan on introducing some other characters as well, namely Tyreese and Michonne. Those two characters are pretty crucial to the story, especially in the prison. Also, if they include the angle with the Governor’s daughter, this show could get even more dark lol.

    ohhh good pick…very good pick…

Fabulous choice! If you want to know if he can do dark, skip the milder stuff listed above and watch him in the “Red Riding” trilogy (great trilogy — very dark, violent, twisted British crime stuff). The title refers to the West Riding region of Yorkshire, and the tagline is “Evil Lives Here.” Morrissey plays Jobson, and he was great in them!
