This week on Should We Know You?, we profile (not racially) a true renaissance man. He’s a skilled action figure customizer, co-host of a comic-themed podcast, and tours the country as one of the the best up-and-coming stand-up comedians on stages today. On top of that, he’s a hardcore member of The PoP!ulation! Join us, won’t you, as we ask Viet Huynh…Should We Know You?
Viet: I’m not sure if you know, but I’m kind of a big deal. I mean I have like 10′s of fans and 2 of them AREN’T spambots.
Viet: As of June 25th (also my birthday) this year, I have been doing stand-up for 4 years.
PoP!: What are some of your proudest accomplishments as a stand-up?
Viet: A stripper that was at one of my shows pulled down her pants to show me her penis tattoo that she had on her upper thigh. A close 2nd would be working and meeting a lot of great people that I wouldn’t have met otherwise. I also won a few competitions and have attended some comedy festivals along the way.
PoP!: Another of your many talents is featured on your custom toy blog, Comedian Viet’s Custom Toys. What got you interested in customizing action figures?
Viet: I started collecting Marvel Legends around 2005. I was pretty obsessed to the point where I was tired of waiting for them to make a figure that I wanted. I was pretty obsessed with the Age of Apocalypse and wanted an AoA Sunfire so badly that I decided to just take matters in my own hands. From there I started looking up tutorials online and the rest is history. A few years later they finally made an AoA Sunfire, but I still like mine better.
PoP!: What are your favorite custom projects you have completed? (Editor’s Note: My favorite is Viet’s pair of Jamie Madrox Multiple Men.)
Viet: My AoA Sunfire will always be my favorite since it was my first, but the one custom I’ve done that gets the most hits on my blog is my Lana Kane action figure from the TV show Archer. I was lucky enough to be opening for Aisha Tyler, who does the voice for Lana Kane, and was able to make her an action figure of her character. I was worried that I was going to come off as a creepy fanboy, but she thought it was awesome and was really cool about it. She even took a picture of her and the action figure! *girlish screams*
Viet: Earth’s Mightiest Podcast is a podcast covering all the main Avengers books as well as the major Marvel events that involve The Avengers. The hosts of the show are Corwin (comic book binding guru), Alex (free lance illustrator), and myself. Since there’s so many titles out at the moment we figured we could save people some money who might want to keep up with The Avengers, but can’t afford to have EVERY title in their pull lists. We also review the books we cover so you know what stories you should pick up or pass on.
Viet: I’m working on trying to integrate my comedy, the podcast, and custom toy making to further my careers in all three categories. My ultimate goal is to be able to go to conventions for free or even make some money in the process. I have done shows with Eugene Ahn aka Adam WarRock called “An Intimate Evening of Comedy and Rap Music” which is me doing comedy and Eugene telling stories and performing his songs. With him being a geek MC it has given me some good exposure to his fan base. Hopefully the podcast will gain enough popularity to the point where we can start setting up a table and I can possibly sell my custom action figures or get some commission work out it.
PoP!: Where can people find you on the interwebs?
Viet: My Comedian website, my custom toy blog, Earth’s Mightiest Podcast, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Also, I’m usually hanging out in the Custom Figure Showroom thread in The PoP!ulation Forums, and you can almost always find me in the 11th Hour Radio chat, Tuesday nights at 7 PM EST!
