IDW to Release New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Series
Earlier this weekend at WonderCon, IDW Publishing announced that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be returning in an ongoing comic series. Based upon the original 1984 series, IDW will begin publishing new issues of TMNT this summer. This new series promises “new and exciting storylines that also maintain the ‘turtle power’ core beloved by millions of fans.” There are also plans to release remastered versions of the older Turtles comics as well, beginning with the independently published 1980s books.
Also, as part of the effort to revitalize the TMNT brand, Nickelodeon will be joining IDW to begin broadcasting a new TMNT animated series, beginning in late 2012. This fully CGI-animated program has been promoted by Nickelodeon as “funnier and ninja-ier” than previous incarnations.
“Through this partnership, we’re able to introduce Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to a new generation of fans, while also providing new stories for the fans who grew up enjoying these comics,” said Paula Allen, Senior Vice President, Global Publishing, Nickelodeon Consumer Products. “These all-new comics and graphic novels based on the original series will support the overwhelming demand we’ve received from the millions of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans looking to reconnect with this celebrated franchise.”
Here’s a preview clip for the new series. It doesn’t show much, but what do you think? Will this new cartoon and comic series revitalize the brand for younger generations while satisfying long-time Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans?

SWEET!!!
I love me some TMNT.
The news of a new comic book really excites me. And I couldn’t be happier that they plan to release new versions of the old comics. I’ve wanted to read that stuff forever. I’ve only ever gotten the change to read the first 11 issues along with a few one shots. I’d love to be able to read all of volume 1.
The new show excites me too. I hope it’s good. I’m also thrilled that Nickelodeon will be airing the 2003 series at some point. To date that is my favorite incarnation of the Turtles (though Fast Forward and Back to the Sewer are better off forgotten). I really hope we see seasons 1-5 of the 2003 series released on DVD. To date season 3 has never been collected together on DVD and neither has season 4.
This is great news!! I have been wanting to read more of the series for awhile now. IDW has really been doing a great job getting the best of 80′s comic properties back to print!
