Secret Six #8

It’s no secret how much I love this series, and it’s my favorite title currently being published. Not just by DC, mind you, but by anyone. And this is quite possibly the best issue yet.

Newest Six member Jeanette wants to take teammate Deadshot out on a date, and she’s made it clear that it’s not a request. When he fails to recruit Catman as a chaperone, Scandal steps in. She’s recently run into the stripper the guys hired for her birthday, and the woman is a bit smitten with our Miss Savage. So the four of them head out for a night on the town, with one little twist. In order to make the evening more romantic, and so as not to scare off Liana, who’s unaware of her companions occupations, Floyd & Scandal promise not to kill anyone. Needless to say, between aggressive suitors and a white supremacy group out for revenge, that’s a difficult task. Meanwhile, wanting some action of his own, Ragdoll hides in the trunk of the car, and we’re treated to one of his dreams. Much awkwardness and hilarity ensue.

This is the first issue of the series with artwork not from Nicola Scott & Doug Hazelwood, and while they’re missed, Carlos Rodriguez & Bit do a fantastic fill-in job. As far as I’m concerned, they can step in anytime the regular duo needs a break, and if Nicola & Doug ever have to leave, Carlos & Bit get my vote as their replacements. And I can’t go any further without praising the artwork of Amanda Gould, who’s responisble for the “Tiny Sixers” back-up. She does a spectacular job of interpreting the Tiny Titans art style, and if DC is keen on raising more prices while including extra content, I’d gladly pay an extra dollar for this book if this was to become a regular feature. As usual, Gail Simone does a stand-out writing job. In my opinion, no one writes these characters better. But it’s not just the characterizations that make this book my favorite. It’s the little things. A shopping cart full of eggs. Ragdoll’s “fruitasmic rainbow of condoms.” Floyd borrowing Blake’s Booster Gold brand cologne. And Deadshot’s fashion sense, which I’ve include below. This issue get the full monty, 5 out of 5 dog collars.

Who ARE these people!?

As one of the co-founders of Panels on Pages, Robert Eddleman will happily read any comic that catches his interest, regardless of publisher. Aside from comics and PoP!, his other passions include worshipping Joss Whedon, getting lost in TV Tropes, and watching muscled men hit each other with folding chairs.
