Following up on a stellar first issue is tricky, but Secret Avengers pulls it off. Issue 2 has a lot going on. Sharon Carter is chasing down her assailant who is after the Avengers who are on Mars looking for Nova who is under the control of a mysterious third crown that is coveted by the enormous monster attacking Beast and Steve Rogers. You get all that? Like I said, there is a lot going on here, but it all works. The sister pieces to the Serpent Crown is an excellent starting point for a story like this and there’s a lot of mystery about everything. It’s black ops, but it’s still definitely an Avengers story

I don’t want to give away too many specifics, but suffice to say the dialogue is all spot-on (with the exception of maybe Moon Knight’s way expository bit at the end) and the action is superb. There’s a great exchange between O’Grady and War Machine that echoes with a reverence to Scott Lang we haven’t see in quite some time.

On the art side, Deodato continues to absolutely knock it out of the park. “With Will Conrad” is an odd credit, so I’m not sure what he did exactly, but the art is consistent throughout the book. I don’t love the space suit designs for the team, but I appreciate that they exist. They absolutely need space suits, but the red and blue doesn’t work for me. I would have preferred that they all be like Moon Knight and Beast’s, which are variations on their existing costumes. They’re not bad, but the inconsistency in design is worth mentioning.

If it seems like I’m nit picking, it’s because there’s really not a lot to complain about in this book. Given Brubaker’s penchant for long runs, I think we’re in for a hell of a ride. Secret Avengers #2 gets 4.75 out of 5 shadowy blurs.

  1. I loved it as well. It’s my favorite Avengers Title right now. Oh don’t worry about nit picking and complain about this book, I’m sure Kerouac will find SOMETHING. lol

  2. Yeah, I absolutely LOVED this issue. It too is my favorite Avengers title right now.

I didn’t mind the space suits, though I thought Moon Knight and Beast’s were the best.

Deodato is such an amazing artist, and Brubaker is just killing it. I take back what I said about him not being able to write team books.
