Smallville Season 9 Season Finale
So, it seems the last time I did one of these was the mid-season break. YIKES!
It’s not that the back half of the season hasn’t been good. Trust me, it has. We got the Justice Society, Checkmate, Silver Banshee, and even Max Lord. If anything, it’s probably been one of the best season’s of the show. To be honest, I don’t know WHY I haven’t been doing reviews. But I’m back just in time to wrap up season nine, and boy does it go out on a high note. With one exception…
Did anyone else notice that the Kandorian on the Washington Monument was not at ALL in scale?
That aside, this episode was great. We’re teased with the return of Lex, we’re shown Kal El’s costume (sort of), and if I’m not mistaken, we get a look at Granny Goodness and the potential presence of some Parademons. Yes, as Season 9 comes to an end and the battle with Zod draws to a close, it seems as though the stage has been surreptitiously set for an invasion of Apokaliptic proportions when Season 10 launches.
Oh, and Lois may be onto something…
All this, and one of the best fight scenes I’ve seen on the show, in the form of Clark vs. Zod at the episode’s end. I have to say that their conflict has probably been the best we’ve gotten from Smallville in… well, ever. The brevity beats the long and drawn out (and ultimately impotent) rivalry with Lex. The intensity of character development on both sides, however, easily trumps something like Brainiac’s arc. And, as I said above, with Checkmate as a backdrop for the second half of this season, Smallville has stepped up its game across the board. Pun fully intended.
The Season 9 Finale gets 5 out of 5 dramatic cliffhangers that aren’t really that dramatic (I mean, honestly, they’re not going to open season 10 with Clark dying)

Shit just got awesome! I hope he learns how to fly.
You mean to save himself? With a blue Kryptonite dagger in his chest? Never gonna happen. Hawkman to the rescue. Or J’onn. My guess is you won’t see him fly until they KNOW they’re filming their last episode. It’ll either be HOW he saves the day, or it’ll be the last thing you see in the episode.
“Finale?” 21 episodes? What the hell? no show has a 21 episode season! We were shorted three shows!
I wasn’t aware you were still watching…
Lee, 21 episodes have been the standard for Smallville and a lot of other shows on lesser networks for a while. Part of it is their ending on a cliffhanger, I think, as the script for the end would probably be the 22nd episode of the season. Of course after they bank the real final episode, then you are deeper in the hole more and more every season.
At any rate, 21 episodes is the norm for Smallville.
Really?… I had no idea.
I thought this was a great ending. And if next season is indeed the last, then making Darkseid the main attraction is definitely going to be an awesome way to finish it off. I can’t friggin’ wait!!
My wife and I were watching the season finale and saw the old lady knitting and was like “Who is that?” and my wife said “Hmmm. Maybe it’s Granny Goodness.”
I was so proud.
My first thought was that it was someone in disguise. And then I was like. OMG!!! Granny Goodness! And as soon as Oliver said “These aren’t Kandorians” I almost shit myself.
I paused it, rewinded it, and then played Oliver out loud… They’re not Kandorians? HOLY SHIT!
I never noticed the 21 episodes until right now when I got up to check my DVD collection. Season 1 had 21 episodes and the seasons after that they varied from 22 to 23 back to 21 during the last 3 seasons.
I loved the ending of this season and I really cant wait to see what Smallville’s version of Darkseid is gonna look like.
It may not be Granny Goodness. Maybe Lex in disguise? The “They’re not Kandorians” could be anything. Lex’s clones? Demons? Wraiths from the Phantom Zone? Anything……
Always wanted to get into this series. Might start soon. Are the initial seasons good?
We went a bit deeper on Smallville last year, Zeroskull. Take a peek and see for yourself. http://panelsonpages.com/?p=14382
