OtLB – Clash of the Titans
We’re all about comics here at Panels on Pages, but a geek cannot live on comics alone. Outside the Longbox is our chance to spotlight something outside our typical four-color realm – be it movies, music, TV or whatever.
Just last week, I finally hauled my ass to the theater to see Sherlock Holmes. I was nervous when the movie started that I might not really enjoy it, because I’d very nearly had the entire movie going experience spoiled for me. How so?
I enjoyed the hell out of Holmes, don’t get me wrong, but I walked out of the theater with the date March 26 etched into my brain. Liam Neeson as Zeus in shimmering armor? Sam Worthington’s Perseus facing off against a breathtaking Medusa? THE GIANT FREAKING KRAKEN!?!?!?
Let me just say that, like many here at PoP!, I’ve been disappointed by the proliferation of CGI in Hollywood, especially considering how poorly done some of it is. Even the best examples of CGI – and, yes, I’m looking at you, Transformers 2 – suffer from directorial decisions like quick cuts that prevent us from having a real chance to enjoy what we’re seeing. This trailer alleviates any fear of that here, as we see the camera take its time, savoring every shot, and delivering fully on the beautiful effects work that has gone into this movie.
I’m an unabashed fan of the original film in all its stop-motion glory, and was terrified at the prospect of a remake. I’d no expectations of Leterrier’s apparent love for the source material, evidenced in each and every second of this trailer. Now, I’m as cynical and skeptical as the next guy, and we’ve still got two months before we find out if the finished product is as good as what we’ve seen here. But damn… I’ve got something to look forward to as these two months inch by.
Just… uh… let’s skip the pet Furby this time?

How much did the studio pay you?
Harryhausen… Rolling in his grave or jealous he didn’t get to do this first?
This and Solomon Kane I’ve been waiting for anxiously. I too was skeptical about a remake, but this movie is a perfect reason to do a remake. You have better effects and you can tell the story with a different tone than the original. It was fun and all, but still an over all goofy movie that can be remolded into a great action epic.
@ Tomer – Nothing. Yet.
@ Lee – SO not dead.
@ DW – I knew I could have faith in you. I agree entirely that this is exactly what remakes are for. Let’s be honest, you can watch Jason and the Argonauts from 1963 and Clash of the Titans from 1981 and the effects aren’t particularly better in the latter than the former. Now, I’m not usually an effects man, but… when you’re telling a story of Greek myths, you NEED to be able to bring them to life. I can’t wait to see that happen this March
*wipes egg from face*
Dude I am SO stoked for this!
But seriously, I feel they HAVE to have the mechanical owl! It was retarded but that’s why I loved it! His little checking himself for damage, badly needing grease, getting easily thrown against a rock by something it was trying to annoy…it’s just….too awesomely bad to be cast aside (and not into a rock!).
Oh, Cat, I’m fine with Bubo (or however you spell it) being there, just a bit less Furbyish. Honestly, though, I’m thinking they may go a significantly different route to avoid the silliness of the original.
While I am not gung ho for this movie, I do defnitly want to see it.
They got me with an instrumental version of The Used’s The Bird and The Worm!! O_O
