The PoP! Fangirl of the Month - November 2009

Nov 7th, 2009 | By Matthew Cavazos | Category: Fangirl of the Month, Features, Headlines

The PoP! Stars scour all of teh internetz in search of the most Fabulous Females of Fandom. Please keep it in your pants.

Well-known in the Internet circle of the recently past Wizard Universe Message Board, this month’s Fangirl is the Panels on Pages’ own “Tripper McGee,” whom was recruited into the PoP! fold well after her consideration and nomination into the Panels 0n Pages crew! So without any more gilding of the lily or further ado, let’s hear from our resident grammar wrangler…

hpim1511Name: Jamie M. Doles
AKA/Handle: Tripper McGee
Birthdate: December 10, 1981

(Did you know that in Latin, urbs means city and sub means below? So, suburb essentially means “below the city.” Pretty neat, huh?)
Marital Status: Never
Current Occupation: Editorial assistant for a publishing house
Favorite Comics: I couldn’t say. I’m very much looking forward to the Archaia Comic collaboration with the Henson Company, though.  Original works of The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Fraggle Rock!
Favorite Writers: Tolkien, Austen, Ovid, Palahniuk, Virgil, Kafka
Favorite Artists: Brian Froud, three of the four Ninja Turtles’ namesakes (guess), Nikki Pappanduros, Degas, Kristin “Foxy” Allen, Dali, Amy McIntyre, Chandra Free
Favorite Movies: Labyrinth, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, A Streetcar Named Desire, the original Star Wars trilogy
Favorite TV Shows: American Gothic, My So-Called Life, True Blood, Fraggle Rock, Lost, Dinosaurs, Heroes, The Muppet Show, The Sopranos, Farscape, Eastbound and Down
Favorite Video Games: Rock Band, Castlevania. I love The Sims. I had all of the expansion and extras for the first and second PC games. The Sims 3 is pretty tight.
Favorite Music: I enjoy quite a wide range - Ozzy Osbourne, Janis Joplin, New Kids on the Block, Pink Floyd, Jennifer Hudson, Led Zeppelin, Doris Day, Pantera, Rosemary Clooney, Vader, Grateful Dead, Smashing Pumpkins, Bessie Smith, Jefferson Airplane, recently got into SoulSwitch

img_2208Turn-Ons: Confidence, glasses, music, talent, intelligence, money, Heath Ledger’s Joker, diamonds, Sean Bean
Turn-Offs: People who remind me of Eeyore, bad breath, retail, feet, arrogance

Now on to the juicier stuff, rrrrrrrrrrrowl. Now, Ms. McGee, if that truly is your name, what makes you a Fangirl?
I have enough nerd T-shirts that I only need to do laundry once a month. I never pass a toy aisle without taking a look. I knowingly bounced a check to buy the DVD of Fanboys. And what kind of check was it? Muppets!

So how and when did you become as the French say, Le Fangirl?
I feel like I’ve always been one. My mom tells me I was obsessed with the Muppets when I was very little. In preschool, we used to pretend we were Thundercats. I was always Cheetara. I had a ton of He-Man toys, too.

img_2870Do you have a favorite childhood geektastic memory?
My dad taking me to see Labyrinth stands out. We were finding seats when Jareth first appears in the film. Convincing my grandma to buy me a pop-up book about goblins at a garage sale. (Goblins was written by Brian Froud and is worth a pretty penny, but I’d never part with it.) The Christmas I received the Ludo plush (read: “stuffed animal”) from my aunt Dorri. I see a theme.

And what are your current Fangirl-tastic obsessions?
They really haven’t changed much - Star Wars, Henson, The Lord of the Rings. Loving Lost and Heroes. I put The Dark Knight on a continuous  loop when I first got it. “LOOK AT ME!”

What is the most Fangirl-ish thing you’ve ever done?
At the most recent San Diego Comic-Con, I snuck into the restricted holding area, a safe haven from fans, where all the celebrities hang out between appearances… so I could meet a man who portrays a psychopathic super-villain on TV. I regret nothing.

l_a0aa0d705267484b9e7f49d51446687cNow what has been your biggest Geek-Out Moment?
Because of my brazen disregard for tact and good form, I spent about 10-15 minutes with Zachary Quinto at San Diego Comic-Con. After entering the restricted area, I immediately walked up to the very awesome Mel Caylo of Archaia Comics and interrupted his conversation with  Quinto.
When his initial shock at my presence wore off, Mel introduced me to Jeph Loeb. Between gawking at the Mythbusters guys and being mistaken for an employee of Archaia, I commented to Quinto on how fantastic I thought the Spock sketch was on the table near him (I later learned “Spock” was drawn by the immensely talented Chandra Free). He looked me square in the eyes and agreed. To my absolute delight, Mel invited me to accompany him as he escorted Quinto to his golf cart in the annals of the San Diego Convention Center. As we exited the holding area, a barrage of people swarmed upon us. Shouts for autographs and photos were heard as two security guards attached themselves to either side of Quinto, almost carrying him through a side door. As I was barred from entry, Mel grabbed for me with a, “She’s with us.” Sweeter words had never been spoken. Mel introduced me to Quinto as we were waiting for the elevator. I told Quinto I admired his work, and he thanked me and posed for a photo. In the elevator, I made a joke and some comments and was actually not gushing like a fool. I walked next to Quinto the whole way to the golf cart and shook his hand in parting. He remembered my name when we exchanged “It was nice to meet you’s.” Greatest moment ever.

How has being a Fangirl affected other aspects of your life?
I didn’t quite embrace my nerdiness until after high school. It was always there, but I kind of kept it in check. Now, though, I wave my fangirl flag for all to see. Up until recently, my desk at work was adorned with an insane amount of toys. On the walls, I have photocopies of sketches and a Marvel Simpsons drawing I picked up in Tijuana. The most significant effect being a fangirl has had on my life has been the wonderful and amazing people I’ve met since letting my inner nerd shine through. No one, fangirl/boy or otherwise, could ask for a better group of friends.

img_0014You’re stranded on a deserted island. You can have one action figure, one trade paperback, one Video Game, one DVD and one CD. What are they? (And mind the poor grammar!)
Hoggle from Labyrinth [by NECA], Demon in a Bottle [the Epic Iron Man Storyline], Rock Band, Pineapple Express, Led Zeppelin IV!

What would be your advice to the Fanboy wanting to win over the Fangirl of his dreams?
Be yourself. Women dig honesty. That’s really it.

Where can folks go to learn more about you on the interwebz?
I’m all about Twitter. If you want constant updates that perfectly showcase just how neurotic I am, please feel free to follow me: www.twitter.com/trippermcgee. I’m on Facebook and, of course, the PoP! message boards. I also have a couple of videos on YouTube and a Blip.fm station. If you Google “Tripper McGee,” you’ll find me.

  17. I never heard about the Quinto story! That’s too awesome! Especially since Mel was there. He’s one of the nicest people I’ve met. I’ll never forget when he gave me free trades at WWC ‘08 as “reading material for the drive home”. ^_^ I miss that guy.

I loved your video too! The audience’s reaction is truly amazing. *huggles Tripper*

  18. Thank you all so much! I’m really honored to be a part of the PoP! family. Now, why do people always think I’m a dude on the forums?!

  19. Probably the same reason Matt-Batt thought I was a black dude.

  20. KEISHA!

  21. Cause you’re on a comic book message board and aren’t screaming girl

  22. I still hold that Knize is a black dude from the waist down.

    But no.

  24. I got to sing a duet of “A Whole New World” at Disneyworld with the legendary Tripper McGee.

WHO WANTS TO FUCKING TOUCH ME?!

  25. It’s about time Tripper got a tribute. She was awesome on the WUMB and is doubly awesome on PoP! Thanks for all you do to keep us on our toes, Trip.

  26. Aw, glad I could contribute to your “Geek-Out Moment,” Trip! It was certainly an interesting day. And I miss you, too Frodo!

  27. Hey Mel! Is Archaia sending you to C2E2?

  28. Love you, Mel!

  29. Hey, Jason! Yes, Archaia and I will be representin’ at C2E2! See you there!

  30. I’ve been informed that listing money as a turn-on makes me sound like a gold digger. That’s not the case! I’ve never dated anyone solely for his money. But, I’ve also never had the chance, so there you go.

  31. In this economy, I don’t think it’s totally out of bounds to list money as a turn on. My lack of it is definitely one of my turn-offs!
