Another Dark Avenger gets his own splotlight, and after the debut issue, I’d put it somewhere on par with the previous minis. This is, so far, an interesting little character study of Ares. This issue reinforces the idea that the god’s only true motivations in this world are war and his son.
The dialog Gillen provides for Ares and his ragtag Shades is fantastic. While at first I worried that the god of War was being written a bit out of character, it all came together pretty quickly. Ares is a badass, but he’s also got a somewhat human side.
Oh, and we finally get a look at his “powers,” so to speak, as he shows that anything and everything that exists as a facet of war is his domain.
Most importantly, however, there is a scene in which Ares congratulates one of his pupils for learning the lesson of the day: “Sometimes you have to blow up your commanding officer.” Could this be a nod to a future betrayal? Dear god, I hope so.
