New Avengers #50

By Brian Michael Bendis, Billy Tan and a slew of guests

The milestone 50th issue of New Avenger is upon us and it’s pretty damn great. We’re right in the middle of the first Dark Reign arc, so it’s not launching anything new, but it IS double-sized and FULL of guest artists. The plot pits the New Avengers against the Hood and his gang when they were expecting Norman Osborn’s Dark Avengers instead. The NA aren’t too keen on Norman plastering Thunderbolts with their names all over the TV. Who would have thought? The dialogue in the apartment scene where they’re piecing it all together is fantastic. Hell, all the dialogue is solid. The final pages with Ronin unmasked on TV after the fight telling the people what a monster Norman Osborn is are REALLY powerful.

The art is great, too. Billy Tan’s Cap is a little big for my liking, but the storytelling is wonderful. He’s a craftsman. During the big fight scene, they brought in a different artist for every page spotlighting a specific character at that moment. David Aja does Iron Fist’s page, Lenil Yu does Wolverine’s, etc. It is a VERY cool approach that is made even better with each character’s inner monologue.

There’s a whole world of possibilities for these characters, and I for one can’t wait to see what happens. Don’t miss out on this book. It’s going to be a helluva ride.

See when you play well as a team you don’t even need a pool table to get the desired effect… ZING!

    *in best Troy McClure voice*

“Hello, I’m Ronin. You may remember me from such other superheroic guises as ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘Goliath 2.’”

  4. Robert Eddleman says:

It’s the “Goliath 2″ part that really makes it work, I think.
